What Jobs Are Actually Open to Foreigners in Japan

Only on a few visa types, and it's narrower than "digital nomad visa" branding suggests. That visa tops out at six months and doesn't lead anywhere long-term. If you want to actually live here long-term, you need a Japan-based employer or your own business, not a foreign paycheck.

Most people I talk to didn't either. Teaching is the easy entry, but it dead-ends past a few years unless you build something on top of it. IT is learnable without a degree if you put in a year of unglamorous study, that's the whole premise of Path B.

Teaching, IT, hospitality and tourism, translation and localization, and increasingly engineering or finance once your Japanese is solid. Most other fields still favor Japanese nationals unless you're already fluent.

IT (infrastructure, security, cloud especially), finance, consulting, and senior management at foreign firms. Teaching essentially never gets you there. The salary guide has the real numbers, not guesses.

IT, project management, and negotiation skills transfer cleanly. Teaching transfers less than people hope, unless you pivot into corporate training or ed-tech. Pick the path with your exit already in mind, not just the entry.

Comes up less than people worry it will, but when it does: doctor, engineer, anything at a recognizable company name, civil servant. Teacher is respected but read as modest.

Same method I use on myself: decide a number the market and your track record actually support, ask your manager directly what it takes to get there, get the answer in writing, hit the target, then go back and show it. Works well outside rigid, seniority-based Japanese firms, less reliably inside them. Never threaten to quit unless you mean it.
